What do New Changes to Private Health Insurance Means?
A new
yet significant change to private health insurance policies has been seen
rolling out, which can save families living overseas from spending thousands of
dollars.
Before
we begin to know the changes made, let us first understand what private health
insurance and its benefit are.
Private
Health Insurance and Benefit
Private
health insurance policies in Australia cover the bills of a private hospital of
the concerned person. You can take basic private health insurance that covers
frequent doctor visits, emergency ambulance requirements, etc. On the other
hand, you can also include coverage for specific treatments like dental,
orthopedic, optical, physiotherapy, etc.
Now you
may ask, what is the benefit of private health insurance? The most obvious
benefit you can enjoy is that private health insurance can cover your basic
healthcare needs. Medical treatments are expensive in Australia, and a common
person will struggle to pay all his medical bills. Therefore, private health
insurance is specially curated to cover your healthcare expenses.
Private
Health Insurance New Changes
Dependent
children’s age limit used to be considered until 25 years. It has been
increased to 31 years for a few health insurers from Australia. This means you
can include your dependent child aged 31 years in the family policy for an
extended period.
BUPA,
HCF, Medibank, and AHM are the ones who have increased the age limit of
dependent children. These new additions have allowed families to save thousands
of dollars to spend on their health.
However,
you need to pay a 25% loading fee for your first adult child that you want to
include in your family health cover. It can be considered as a one-off payment.
BUPA
BUPA
announced a new change on September 1: their clients could include their
dependents in their family policies until they turn 32.
Chris
Carroll, the managing director of BUPA Health Insurance, believed that the new
change made to private health insurance would help more Australians to get easy
access to private healthcare services at affordable prices.
Here is
what Carroll said, “The pandemic prompted many young people to re-evaluate
what’s important to them, and their health and wellbeing have emerged as clear
priorities.”
He
continued, “This policy change will not only have financial benefits for
young Aussies who are facing an increasing cost of living pressures, but it
will also help support ongoing participation in private health – a critical
factor in keeping it affordable and accessible for the rest of the community
while taking pressure off our public system which remains under stress.”
HCF
On the
same day, September 1, the age limit of adult dependents was increased by the
health fund HCF from 25 to 31.
The CEO
of HCF, Sheena Jack, said that it is essential to keep healthcare facilities
affordable for all families.
“We
know that cost of living pressures are mounting for all Australian families,
and that means the typical household dynamic is changing,” Jack said.
Followed
by, “More and more young adults, particularly in capital cities, are
staying at home with their parents to help ease the burden of cost pressures
while studying or establishing early careers. This age increase is one way that
we can help make healthcare more affordable for those younger members.”
Medibank
and AHM
Along
with BUPA and HCF, Medibank and AHM have also implemented the same changes in
their private health insurance policies.
Milosh
Milisavljevic, executive of Medibank Group, also said that the change in
private health insurance would allow the younger generation to use the
insurance without having their cost of living affected.
Milisavljevic
said, “We want younger customers to remain in private health insurance to ensure
they are covered for the unexpected while also taking some of the pressure off
the public health system.”

health insurance providers - NIB, GMHBA. Australian Unity and Frank Health
